Linux and Networking Basics for Cloud Deployments

Review processes, permissions, DNS, ports, HTTP, and safe inspection practices when troubleshooting a cloud-hosted service.

Part of Cloud Computing & DevOps Course

Cloud services still depend on operating systems, processes, files, and networks. A basic troubleshooting method begins with observation and a clear description of expected behavior.

Inspect the host safely

Check service status, process lists, available disk space, and relevant logs before changing configuration. Use read-only commands first and follow change controls on shared systems.

Trace a network request

DNS resolves a name, routing carries traffic, a port reaches a service, and an application returns a response. A failure can occur at any layer, including firewall rules, bindings, certificates, configuration, or application health.

Protect permissions and credentials

Use least privilege and approved secret stores. Do not paste credentials into shell history, tickets, screenshots, or source files. Redact sensitive values from diagnostic output before sharing it.

Practice with a local service or approved lab and record each check so another person can reproduce the investigation.
