OVERVIEW

About Cloud Computing Foundations and Architecture

Cloud computing provides on-demand access to computing resources through a provider. Choosing a service requires understanding the workload, security needs, operational responsibilities, and cost controls—not simply picking a product name.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

What You Will Learn

  • Distinguish common cloud service models.
  • Explain shared responsibility at a high level.
  • Sketch a basic application architecture and identify its dependencies.
TOPIC GUIDE

Learn Cloud Computing Foundations and Architecture

Compare service models

Infrastructure as a Service offers configurable compute, storage, and networking. Platform as a Service manages more of the runtime environment. Software as a Service provides a complete application. The precise boundary varies by provider and service, so inspect current documentation.

Understand shared responsibility

A provider operates parts of the underlying service, while the customer remains responsible for choices such as identity permissions, application configuration, data handling, and access. The split depends on the service model and should be verified for each service.

Design around an application

Map the client, application runtime, data store, network boundaries, identity, monitoring, and recovery needs. Identify what must remain available and what data must be protected. Start with the simplest architecture that meets the stated requirements.

Estimate and control costs

Cloud resources can incur charges while running or storing data. Use approved training accounts, set budgets and cleanup steps, and avoid creating resources without understanding their cost and access implications.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Example / Code

Example
Sample request path
Client -> DNS -> HTTPS endpoint -> application runtime -> data store
                         |-> logs and metrics
Review: identity, network boundaries, backups, cost, and recovery
TRY IT YOURSELF

Practice Task

Apply what you learned with a practical activity.

Draw a simple architecture for a fictional web application. Label the request path, identity boundary, data store, monitoring, backup plan, and one cost-control measure. State which responsibilities need provider-specific verification.

TOOLKIT

Tools & Technologies

  • Cloud platform documentation
  • Architecture diagram
  • Cost calculator
