OVERVIEW

About Infrastructure as Code with Terraform Concepts

Infrastructure as Code represents infrastructure configuration in files that can be reviewed and versioned. It can improve repeatability, but it also makes a code change capable of creating, changing, or deleting real resources.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

What You Will Learn

  • Explain declarative infrastructure and resource configuration.
  • Review a plan before applying changes.
  • Describe state, drift, and least-privilege access risks.
TOPIC GUIDE

Learn Infrastructure as Code with Terraform Concepts

Describe intended state

Configuration declares the resources and relationships a team wants. Variables and reusable modules can reduce duplication, but should remain understandable to the people reviewing changes.

Review a plan before applying

A plan previews proposed changes; it is an important review artifact, not a guarantee that an operation is harmless. Check for replacement or deletion, network exposure, identity changes, and cost impact before approval.

Understand state and drift

State helps map configuration to managed resources. Protect it using the platform's recommended backend and access controls. Drift occurs when actual infrastructure differs from declared configuration; investigate the cause before applying corrective changes.

Protect credentials and environments

Keep provider credentials out of code and local state where possible. Use scoped identities, protected environments, and review requirements. Practice only in an approved sandbox with a cleanup plan.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Example / Code

Example
# Illustrative only: review provider setup, state backend,
# permissions, and plan output before any real apply.
resource "example_resource" "training" {
  name = "training-example"
}

# Review changes with a plan; never apply unknown infrastructure changes.
TRY IT YOURSELF

Practice Task

Apply what you learned with a practical activity.

Review a fictional infrastructure plan. Mark each create, update, replace, or delete operation; identify possible cost and exposure changes; and write the approvals and rollback or recovery checks needed before an apply.
