OVERVIEW

About Linux and Networking Basics for Cloud Deployment

Cloud applications still run on operating systems and communicate across networks. Basic command-line and networking skills help learners understand what a service is doing and where a connection may fail.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

What You Will Learn

  • Navigate a Linux shell and inspect processes.
  • Explain DNS, ports, and basic HTTP behavior.
  • Use a safe troubleshooting sequence before changing configuration.

Learn Linux and Networking Basics for Cloud Deployment

Inspect before changing

Use read-only commands first to understand the host, running processes, disk space, and service status. Check logs and configuration paths before restarting or editing a service. In shared or production systems, follow the team's change process.

Understand the request path

DNS maps a name to an address. A client connects to a host and port, then exchanges a protocol such as HTTPS. Firewalls, routing, service bindings, certificates, and application health can all affect a request.

Use permissions and secrets carefully

File and process permissions determine what can be read or changed. Avoid broad permissions and do not place credentials in shell history, screenshots, or source control. Use an approved secret-management method for real deployments.

Make troubleshooting observable

Record the command, time, environment, expected result, and observed result. Change one variable at a time and preserve evidence that can help another person reproduce the issue.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Example / Code

Example
# Read-only examples; inspect before taking action
uname -a
ps -ef
df -h
ss -tuln
getent hosts example.test
curl -I https://example.test
TRY IT YOURSELF

Practice Task

Apply what you learned with a practical activity.

Use a local test service or written scenario. Trace a request from DNS to a listening port, identify two possible failure points, and write a safe inspection checklist that avoids exposing credentials.

TOOLKIT

Tools & Technologies

  • Linux shell
  • SSH concepts
  • DNS tools
  • curl
