OVERVIEW

About Prompt Design for Clearer Generative AI Results

Prompt design is the practice of communicating a task and its constraints clearly. A useful prompt makes the intended audience, available context, required format, and limits explicit. Good prompts reduce ambiguity but do not guarantee factual or unbiased answers.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

What You Will Learn

  • Break a prompt into task, context, constraints, and output format.
  • Refine an answer by changing one meaningful instruction at a time.
  • Use examples and rubrics without including private information.
TOPIC GUIDE

Learn Prompt Design for Clearer Generative AI Results

Give the tool a specific task

Replace a vague request such as "make this better" with an action, audience, and purpose. For example, ask for three headings for a beginner guide, not a finished article containing unverified claims.

Add only useful context

Context can include the audience, tone, source material, or constraints. Do not paste confidential, personal, or client information into a tool unless its use has been approved and the service's data terms are understood. Use fictional or redacted examples for practice.

Specify the output

State a format such as a short outline, a table with named columns, or a list of questions. If accuracy matters, ask the tool to separate supplied facts from assumptions and to identify what needs verification. This is a request for caution, not proof that the tool complied.

Iterate against a rubric

Review the first answer against a small checklist, then adjust one instruction at a time. Compare the result with the original goal and retain useful human edits. A longer prompt is not automatically a better prompt.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Example / Code

Example
Task: Create a 5-item outline for a beginner guide to [topic].
Audience: Adults new to the subject.
Constraints: Use only the supplied notes; flag missing facts.
Format: Numbered list with one sentence per item.
Review: Do not invent statistics, dates, or guarantees.
TRY IT YOURSELF

Practice Task

Apply what you learned with a practical activity.

Take a vague request for a course announcement and rewrite it as a prompt with a defined audience, purpose, approved facts, tone, output format, and explicit unknowns. Compare two iterations and explain which instruction improved the result.
