OVERVIEW

About Python Data Structures and Core DSA for Beginners

Data structures organize information, while algorithms describe the steps used to work with it. Learning core DSA helps new programmers reason about solutions and prepare for more advanced study.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

What You Will Learn

  • Choose lists, dictionaries, and sets for basic problems.
  • Explain stacks and queues through simple examples.
  • Trace a search or sort and compare basic operation counts.
TOPIC GUIDE

Learn Python Data Structures and Core DSA for Beginners

Organize values with collections

Lists keep ordered items, dictionaries associate keys with values, and sets represent unique values. Choose a structure based on the operations a problem needs rather than memorizing names.

Understand stacks and queues

A stack processes the most recently added item first; a queue processes the earliest waiting item first. These patterns appear in navigation history, task scheduling, and many problem-solving exercises.

Practice search and sort

Linear search checks items one by one. Binary search can be used on sorted data by repeatedly reducing the search range. Sorting methods arrange values, but differ in steps and tradeoffs.

Compare solutions simply

Count how the number of operations grows as input grows. Introductory complexity notation gives a useful comparison, but actual performance also depends on data, implementation, and environment.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Example / Code

Example
def contains_value(values, target):
    for value in values:
        if value == target:
            return True
    return False

print(contains_value([4, 8, 12], 8))
TRY IT YOURSELF

Practice Task

Apply what you learned with a practical activity.

Write a function that counts how often each word appears in a sentence using a dictionary. Then explain why a dictionary is useful for this task and test an empty sentence.

TOOLKIT

Tools & Technologies

  • Python
  • Lists and dictionaries
  • Problem-solving checklist
