OVERVIEW

About Mobile App Foundations: From Idea to User Flow

A mobile app project begins by understanding a user need and defining a small, testable first version. Clear scope helps teams decide which screens, data, and device features are actually required.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

What You Will Learn

  • Write a concise app brief for a defined audience.
  • Map a primary flow and its loading, empty, error, and success states.
  • Define acceptance criteria and identify assumptions.
TOPIC GUIDE

Learn Mobile App Foundations: From Idea to User Flow

Start with a user need

Describe who the app is for, what task they are trying to complete, and why a mobile experience is appropriate. Avoid beginning with a feature list before the problem is understood.

Map the smallest useful flow

Sketch the entry point, the main action, and the confirmation or result. Include states for loading, no data, invalid input, lost connectivity, and recovery. These states are part of the product rather than polish added at the end.

Define data and permissions

List the information the app needs and where it comes from. Request device permissions only when a feature needs them, explain the reason in user-facing language, and provide a sensible alternative when permission is declined.

Make requirements testable

Write acceptance criteria that can be checked, such as validating a required field or preserving a draft after a temporary network failure. Note which platform, framework, and device assumptions still need confirmation.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Example / Code

Example
Feature: Save a task
Audience: A person tracking a short to-do list
Flow: Open list -> enter title -> save -> see task
Error state: Blank title shows an inline message
Offline state: Keep a local draft and explain sync status
Acceptance: The saved task remains after reopening the screen
TRY IT YOURSELF

Practice Task

Apply what you learned with a practical activity.

Write a one-page brief for a fictional study planner. Draw its main flow, add at least three non-happy states, identify the data it stores, and list two assumptions to validate before implementation.

TOOLKIT

Tools & Technologies

  • User-flow diagram
  • Wireframe tool
  • Acceptance-criteria checklist
