OVERVIEW

About HTML, CSS and JavaScript for Web Applications

A full-stack developer needs to understand what happens in the browser as well as on the server. This topic connects semantic HTML, CSS layout, basic JavaScript, and HTTP behavior to the Django pages learners build later in the course.

HTML gives content and forms meaningful structure. CSS controls layout and visual hierarchy across screen sizes. JavaScript can improve interaction, but server-side validation remains essential because browser checks can be bypassed. Learn to trace a form from its fields through an HTTP request to a response, and make labels, errors, and controls understandable to keyboard and assistive-technology users.

The objective is a dependable interface that works with Django, not a particular frontend framework. Clear browser fundamentals make it easier to diagnose integration issues and build pages that remain usable when data or validation changes.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

What You Will Learn

  • Structure pages with semantic HTML and correctly associated form labels.
  • Use CSS layout techniques to make content adapt to different viewport sizes.
  • Describe the request and response cycle for a browser form.
  • Use JavaScript for progressive interaction while retaining server-side validation.
TOPIC GUIDE

Learn HTML, CSS and JavaScript for Web Applications

Give the page a meaningful structure

Use headings in a sensible order, buttons for actions, links for navigation, and labels connected to their form controls. Semantic markup improves navigation and gives the browser reliable information about each element. Validation messages should identify the field and describe how to correct it.

Build layouts that can adapt

CSS flexbox and grid help organize navigation, forms, and content without fixed-width assumptions. Check that long text wraps, controls remain reachable, and the page works at narrow widths. Responsive design is part of making the same workflow usable on different devices, not just shrinking a desktop layout.

Follow the form request

A browser submits values to a server endpoint using an HTTP method. Django receives the request, validates the submitted values, applies application rules, and returns a page or redirect. Browser-side JavaScript can give faster feedback, but the server must independently validate data before saving it.

Use JavaScript with clear boundaries

Keep small enhancements focused, such as showing a character count or adding an item to a local list. Do not make essential content or validation depend only on JavaScript. The browser interface and Django backend should agree about field meaning, required values, and error states.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Example / Code

Example
<form action="/tasks/" method="post">
  <label for="task-title">Task title</label>
  <input id="task-title" name="title" required maxlength="120">
  <button type="submit">Create task</button>
</form>
TRY IT YOURSELF

Practice Task

Apply what you learned with a practical activity.

Create an accessible task form with a title and due date. Add clear labels, required-field feedback, and a responsive layout. Submit it to a Django view, validate the same rules on the server, and display a useful error when the title is missing. Do not rely on browser validation as the only check.
